Gordon Shimens was by far my favourite teacher I ever had the privilege to be taught by. He started my love for books, specifically the Great Illustrated Classics books, and helped me grow my passion for reading. He was a huge influence on my life through elementary school and into high school as I quickly realized i wanted to be a happy, fun, and caring teacher just like him. He truly was a first inspiration to me as I came to realize i wanted to work with young children and have a place in their hearts like he did in mine. I am truly saddened by the news of his passing and i wish i got the chance to tell him about how much he encouraged me and paved my future path but i am glad he is resting peacefully now.
I lived next door to the Shimens as a younger child/adolescent and I have such fond memories of our years as neighbours and friends. Dear Gord I am so sorry to hear this news and I send my condolences to all the family members, Karen, John, Alan and Susan. You were far too young for this. Rest in Peace Gord,
