Obituary of Ellen Byrne

Ellen Loretta Byrne (Flynn), beloved mother, cherished grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on March 22, 2025, leaving behind a life rich in love, laughter, and unforgettable memories that will be treasured for generations to come. Ellen was born on the Grey Islands and later moved to Conche, where she met her future husband, William Byrne. A dedicated mother, Ellen gave her heart to her children, always offering love, guidance, and unwavering support. She was the cornerstone of her family, a source of strength and comfort who could always be relied upon. Her wisdom and kindness touched all who knew her, and her deep love for family shone through in everything she did. As a grandmother and great-grandmother, she shared her boundless affection generously, always making time for her loved ones and bringing joy into their lives. Her family was her pride and joy, and the impact of her nurturing spirit will continue to shape the lives of those she leaves behind. Known for her quick wit and infectious sense of humor, Ellen had the rare ability to make everyone laugh. Her playful spirit brought joy wherever she went, and she was often the heart of any gathering. She loved to sing, dance and celebrate life, and her vibrant energy was truly contagious.Though her passing leaves a deep void in the hearts of her family and friends, her spirit will live on in the memories, stories, and love she shared so freely. We take comfort in imagining a garden party in the sky, filled with whiskey, music, dancing, and a few games of cards—just the way she would have liked it. Ellen will be deeply missed, always remembered, and forever loved. She was predeceased by her husband William Byrne; sons Clifford, Jerry, and twins William and Robert Byrne; grandsons Jeremy Scott and Philip Byrne; her parents Michael and Rose Flynn; sisters Elsie Buchanan, Marie Byrne, Anita Flynn; brother Cyril Flynn and son in law, Robert Parsons. Ellen is survived by her loving children: daughters Christine (Matt), Fran (Gary), Elsie (Ed), Doreen (Jean-Guy), Margaret (Bill), and sons Gary (Selina), Mike (Bernice), and Ken (Cassandra). She leaves behind 18 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and also leaving to mourn her sister Eileen Lidster and a large circle of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. A celebration of Ellen’s life will be held in Conche in July (date to be determined), where we will gather in love and gratitude to honor the remarkable woman she was. May she rest in peace, knowing the profound impact she had on the lives of those who knew and loved her. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff of St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital, St. John’s, for their kindness, compassion, and care during this time.
