Velma was born in the Republic of Newfoundland in 1940, more precisely Long Pond Manuels. She was the gritty daughter of the beloved Wilfred Porter and Clairenda Tilley and the big and bossy sister to our Aunts Joyce and Trudy and uncle Rudy – who was waiting at the Pearly gates.
She was a graduate of the Grace General School of Nursing, she landed on the Great Northern Peninsula where she cared for many the ailing patient, often without the aid of a physician. She had an abundance of stories to tell and was well known for her skills in the community of Englee, where she was also known to teach Grade 2. Spending the last 25 years all over this fine country until she moved “home” just last month.
A major importance in her life of 85 years was her precious grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She left a little piece of her in every first bath she gave those babies, games of peek-a-boo, filling up the teenager's car, or dishing out the twenties for scoring a goal or for hitting a home run.
A private celebration of her life will take place at a later date to be determined.
