Stephen Pretty Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Stephen Pretty, who left us peacefully after a short illness, at the age of 48 on September 28, 2025.

Predeceased by his father: Reginald Pretty.

Stephen is lovingly remembered by his wife of 22 years, Gale Martin, and their precious daughter Jane, who was the light of his life. He also leaves behind his mother Grace Pretty, brother Gregory (Carol), sister Heather Morrissey (Neil), mother-in-law Vinie Martin, brother-in-law Kerry Martin (Paula), and his fur buddies Mikah and Solo.

Stephen maintained strong and cherished relationships with his extended family, especially his aunts, uncles, and cousins. He also shared a special bond with his great-nephew Blake. A special thank you is extended to cousin Sarah Hawco for her unwavering support. The family also wishes to acknowledge the many friends and loved ones whose kindness and support have been too numerous to mention but deeply felt.

Stephen had a brotherly bond with his bandmates Steven Denty, Richard Smith, and Mark Frost. Their friendship and presence were a true comfort to Stephen and his family throughout the recent months.

Born and raised in Clarenville, Stephen was immersed in music from an early age. His voice was, without question, world class—resonant, moving, and unforgettable. Whether on stage or off, he carried with him an innate ability to connect with others through song, humour, and empathy.

Professionally, Stephen dedicated his life to the fields of policy and housing, where his brilliance and steady hand made a lasting impact. Always the smartest person in the room, he had an uncanny ability to moderate difficult situations and guide people toward solutions with grace and clarity.

Stephen’s gift for storytelling and his deep desire to make others smile will be remembered and missed by all who knew him.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to Dr. Johnson, NP Shauna Walsh, Dr. Young, Dr. Holmes, Dr. Brake, and the dedicated nurses and staff of 5 South B at the Health Sciences Centre, whose professionalism and care made a difficult time more bearable. Gratitude is also extended to the nurses and volunteers at the Palliative Care Centre at Miller Centre for the compassionate care they provided during Stephen’s final hours. A special mention of thanks to the Community Health team in CBS.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at Hickey’s Funeral Home, CBS on Friday, Oct. 3 from 4-7.

A celebration of Stephen’s life—through music and shared stories—will take place at Hickey’s Chapel on Saturday, October 4 at 1pm. To view the Funeral Service please visit www.hickeysfuneralhome.com and click "LIVE".

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honour Stephen’s memory by sharing a song, a laugh, or a story with someone you love.
