Surrounded by love, Arthur Bertrum Coates (Bert) of Upper Gullies passed away peacefully on November 2, 2025, at the age of 86. He was greatly loved by his family and friends, and his loss leaves a space that can never be filled.

Bert lived his life with quiet strength, kindness, and a deep appreciation for the simple things — family, laughter, hard work, and a job well done. A gifted woodworker and passionate historian, he found joy in creating, sharing stories, and celebrating the beauty of everyday life.

For many years, Bert was a proud and active member of the Kiwanis Club of Conception Bay South, where he dedicated countless hours to serving his community. His generosity of spirit, leadership, and genuine care for others made a lasting impact on all who had the pleasure of working alongside him.

He was predeceased by his parents, Arthur and Florence, as well as his beloved grandchildren, Nicholas Coates and Amanda Hynes-Coates, who surely welcomed him with open arms.

Left with a lifetime of cherished memories are his devoted wife of 65 years, Lucy (Foley); his children Debby, Robert (Michele), Heather (Jim), Terry (Patricia), Jeff (Roxanne), and Cathy (Perry); brother Donald, sister Marylin, and special sister-in-law Mary, lifelong friends Madeline and Roy Tilley, along with his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren who adored him deeply. His warmth, humour, and stories of adventure will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate to know him.

A special thank you is extended to his sons Bob and Terry, daughter Debby and daughters-in-law Michele and Patricia for their unwavering care and devotion — for the meals, the midnight visits, and the gentle support that allowed Bert to maintain his dignity and independence. Your love and kindness will always be remembered with gratitude.

The family would also like to express their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Phillips, nurses Deanne Smith, Jennifer Codner, and Pat Rodgers and the Emergency Room staff at the Health Sciences Centre for their care and compassion.

As per his wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no funeral service. The family finds comfort in knowing that Bert lived a full and meaningful life — one built on love, laughter, and service to others.
