It is with deep sorrow that we announce the unexpected passing of Dr. Thomas (Tom) Cantwell, aged 82, on October 27, 2025. Tom was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, remembered by all who knew him for his generosity, loyalty, and enduring love of everything Irish.
Tom was born on August 9, 1943, in Mothel, Ballyfoyle, County Kilkenny, Ireland, to John (Jack) and Mary Teresa “Doll” (Stapleton) Cantwell. The second born of four children, he missed living close to his siblings, Paula (Pat Farrell), Ned (Maura Knox), and Mary (Miheal Lynch).
Tom pursued a career in medicine, earning his MB, BCh, and BAO degrees from University College Dublin in 1970. That same year, he married the love of his life, Mary Hassett, beginning a partnership that would last 55 wonderful years. Tom began his medical career at Mater Misericordiae Hospital in Dublin, where he practiced with skill, compassion, and a deep commitment to his patients.
In 1975, Tom and Mary embarked on a new adventure, emigrating to Grand Falls-Windsor, Newfoundland and Labrador, with their three young children – Anne-Marie (Conrad Sullivan), Paul, and David (Clara Penny). Two years later, their youngest child, Denise (Matthew Forristall), was born, completing their family.
Tom served as Chief of Psychiatry at the Central Newfoundland Regional Health Centre in Grand Falls Windsor for nine years before relocating to St. John’s. There, he was appointed Chief of Service at the Waterford Hospital, where he worked until his retirement in 2007 as Clinical Chief of the Mental Health Program. Alongside his administrative leadership, Tom maintained a private practice in marital and family therapy, where his thoughtful, compassionate approach made a lasting difference in the lives of many. Countless patients and colleagues have spoken of the profound impact he had on their journeys toward healing and well-being.
In recent years, Tom and Mary made their home once again in Newfoundland and Labrador, moving to Holyrood, after spending seven wonderful years in Miramichi, New Brunswick, and many winters traveling to Florida. Their return to Newfoundland gave them the joy of spending more time with their beloved grandchildren – Emma, Maisy, and Sophie (children of Anne-Marie and Conrad), and Conlan and Saoirse (children of Denise and Matthew).
Some of Tom’s happiest moments were spent surrounded by family – sharing meals that marked holidays and birthdays, telling stories around the table, and watching his grandchildren grow. He especially treasured evening visits with a dear friend and landlord, Bill Synyard, whose companionship meant so much to him in these later years.
Tom will be greatly missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him — his family, friends, colleagues, and the many people whose lives he touched through his work and kindness.
There will not be a public service; however, donations can be made to the Canadian Mental Health Association Newfoundland and Labrador, or the Breast Cancer Research Centre. To send a message of condolence please visit www.hickeysfuneralhome.com.
