Herb was more than a neighbor; he was a steady, kind presence in our lives for the past fourteen years. From the very beginning, he welcomed us with warmth and an easy smile that made the neighborhood feel like home. He was always willing to help with snow clearing, helping his neighbors whenever it was needed. Herb had a quiet way of looking out for others, never seeking recognition, just doing what was right. When I was away working, there was always peace of mind in knowing that Herb would check in on the house and keep a watchful eye on it to make sure everything was fine. As a parent, there was a deep sense of comfort in knowing that when our kids were roller skating, playing in the driveway, or riding their bikes on the street, Herb was keeping a watchful eye out for them. Conversations with Herb were thoughtful and sincere, often shared over a drink or a beer in the shed, filled with humor and wisdom drawn from a life well lived. He had a gift for making people feel heard and valued. Over the years, he became not just a neighbor, but a true friend. Herb will be deeply missed, but his kindness, quiet protection, and friendship will always be remembered with gratitude and affection.

If one ever needed a brother-in-law who was a genuine, respectful, funny(you usually needed a few "Takes" to get what he said!), who couldn't do enough for you and who you'll dearly miss, Herb was that brother-in law.

For 17 years, Herb was the best next door neighbor that Karen and I could have ever asked for. A more kind, generous, welcoming and helpful man would be difficult to come by.
The smoke from his beloved shed was an invitation to drop over for a yarn, a "herb", a few Hawkins Cheezies and a few Jubes. The subjects discussed and world problems resolved, were numerous and I'm certain that the stories were "all true and that some of it even happened".
I first met Herb a few days after we moved next door to him and Brenda in 2007.....he had been dog-sitting Bobby's dog(Becka). We saw a friendly Golden Lab looking in through our patio door and we could hear this voice off in the distance repeatedly calling out to "Becka". I went outside and Herb came around the corner of the house and as soon as he seen her, he said "Becka, you (mild expletive), get back here". She ignored him and he walked up to where Becka and I were now standing and held his hand out and said "I'm Herb, you must be my new neighbor, if there's anything you need, drop over".
I'd often have to travel for work and he'd always make sure the snow in my driveway was cleared. Karen wholeheartedly knew that him and Brenda were just a call away if she ever needed any. He'd always want to know when I'd be leaving and when I'd be back and never missed telling me that he'd take care of the driveway if it snowed.
I used to jokingly refer to him as the Head of Security for Sweetenwater Cresent....in many ways though, he was that. If anything caught his eye (including a cat setting off the motion sensor light over his shed), he was on it. As one of the Sweetenwater Cresents first residents, he had a genuine and heartfelt concern in his neighborhoods and neighbors well being.
Through my time spent in his presence over the years, I fortunately got to know his cherished family and many of his large circle of friends. He was so extremely proud of his family and their accomplishments in life.
Brenda, Bobby, Lori, Adam and the entire extended family.....I'm so sorry for your loss and I hope that your many fond memories will help you get through the difficult days ahead.
RIP my friend.....I'm going to miss the texts/jokes we'd share and I'll hold the memories of our time as neighbors and friends in my heart forever. ❤️
