Eleanor Conway Obituary

It is with extreme sadness that we announce the passing of our mom, Eleanor Conway, on March 3rd, 2026, at the age of 83, at Agnes Pratt Home in St. John’s. While dementia stole her memories in her final years, it could never erase the vibrant, loving, and strong woman that Mom was throughout her life.

Mom is predeceased by her beloved husband, Frank, her mother and father, Cyril and Isabelle Nash, sisters and brothers Margie, Bernice, Ray, Cyril and Roy, mother and father-in-law Thomas and Alice Conway, in-laws Jack Branning, Ernest Maddox, Madeline Nash, Earl Hann, Jeremiah O’Keefe, Bridget and Mick Manning, Alysious Conway.

Leaving to mourn are her daughters Frances (Joe), Michele (Robert) and Lenora, her grandchildren Alice, Joelle (Nick), Miguel (Lauren), Selby, Raymond and their father Kyle, her three great granddaughters Chloe, Samantha and Ella, her sisters Kathleen, Carol (Albert), Linda, Lorna (Dermot), Isabelle (Bobby) and brothers William (Agnes), Kenneth (Jackie) and David (Rita), brother in law Michael Conway, and sisters in law, Dolly Nash, Madonna Conway, Betty Spagnoli, Sara Lagasse, and a large circle of nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends. Mom was a dear friend to many. Her loyalty, honesty, caring, and compassion, as well as her ability to put others’ needs first, allowed her to genuinely embrace everyone she met.

Mom was born and raised in Branch St. Mary’s Bay, one of 14 children. She began her career as a teacher in Point Lance, and then later trained to become a licensed practical nurse. In 1965, she married Frank, and the family moved to Wabush, Labrador. Mom then worked as an LPN at Captain William Jackman Memorial Hospital in Labrador City, where she remained for 30 years. Even in her retirement, mom couldn’t sit still. She decided to continue working and had wonderful relationships with her coworkers at Walmart, where she stayed until 2020.

Mom’s chosen professions only highlight her desire to help and care for others. When Dad was diagnosed with cancer in 1992, Mom was at his side for the chemotherapy, treatments, and leg amputation, nursing him back to health during each stage of the process.

Mom highly valued education and believed in good old hard work. Her dedication to being a mom, working full-time, and completing her education degree at Memorial University led to several summers spent in St John’s and on MUN’s campus.

Mom was a great lover of the outdoors. She looked forward to berry picking, going for long walks, and visiting the beach. She was an avid reader and writer. One of her favorite pastimes was writing poetry about what she saw and experienced, as well as about those she knew, writing tributes for birthdays, anniversaries, and many family celebrations. Her many poems, songs, and stories will live on.

Although the journey of dementia was incredibly difficult and heartbreaking, it also highlighted Mom’s enduring resilience and taught us all the true meaning of compassion. Mom will be remembered for her "good heart" rather than the disease and we will continue to honour the memories that dementia tried to steal. Mom and Dad are now reunited. Rest in Peace

The family would like to express sincere gratitude to the entire staff of the Fairhaven Unit at Agnes Pratt Home for their care and compassion.

Mom was considered a part of their family. Your support for Mom and our family through the last few days of Mom’s life will forever be etched in our hearts. We are forever grateful.
