Lewis Richard Hansen Obituary

It is with deep love and heavy hearts that the family of Lewis Richard Hansen announce his passing which occurred on March 13th 2026, surrounded by his best friend and loving partner Sheila Hammond.

Born on August 5, 1939, he was the son of the late Frances and Albert Hansen of New Denmark, New Brunswick. Lewis was predeceased by his sisters Helen and Phyllis, and by his brother Davis.

Lewis is survived by the mother of his children, Rose Hansen (Saulnier); his children: Glenn (Caroline), Verna (Stuart), Laura, Dean, Sheena (George), Shawn (Kelly); his grandchildren: Tonya, Cole, Dylan, Curran, Denver, Kendyl, Grayden, Penny; great grandson Chase, and sisters Betty and Shirley.

Lewis learned at a very young age the value of hard work, resilience and community. A significant influence in Lewis’ life was that of his uncle Ralph Jensen. Ralph’s passion for aviation sparked a lifelong interest in Lewis and while working alongside his uncle at the Moncton Airport, Lewis’ practical skills and curiosity began to take flight.

After completing studies as a machinist at the New Brunswick Institute of Technology, Lewis began working at Gauvin Engine Rebuilders. His career later shifted to steel construction and aviation infrastructure.

Lewis was a co-owner of East Coast Erectors during the 1970’s, contributing to the growth of the company and the region’s construction landscape. He later joined Transport Canada and Nav Canada where he worked and retired with distinction after 20 years of service. Even after retirement, his drive and leadership remained strong – he worked as a contractor and went on to manage East Coast Rigging.

Beyond his working career, Lewis was a man of many talents. He had a deep love for carpentry and craftsmanship and was affectionately known as, “the man with all the tools.” His basement/work shed/mini-barn was a creative haven, meticulously organized – filled with gadgets, wood scraps, and tools of all shapes and sizes, each with its own purpose and story.

Lewis was a storyteller. He could bring a moment to life with detail, warmth and much humor, often laughing until tears strolled down his face. His stories connected generations and revealed wit and wisdom behind his quiet demeanor.

Lewis was a man of few words, but a deep thinker. His life was defined not by accolades but by the relationships he nurtured and the lives he touched. He carried a quiet dignity, living with purpose, humility and grace.

With his partner Sheila by his side, he shared a deep love of Newfoundland, including a life of faith and devotion, a love of watching the Toronto Blue Jays, and a love for daily drives enjoying a picnic lunch along the way.  Visitation in Hickeys Funeral Home, 570 Conception Bay South, on Wednesday March 18th, 2026 from  1-330 pm. The funeral service is Thursday, March 19th, 2026 in Hickey’s Memorial Chapel at 1100 am.
