It is with great sadness that the family of Harvey Rideout announce his passing at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital on Friday, March 20, 2026, at the age of 89. Harvey passed peacefully, surrounded by family, after a brief illness.
He is predeceased by his son, Paul, his parents Harry and Sylvia Rideout, his parents in-law Walter and Victoria Roberts, his sister Grace and brother-in-law Luke Lush, his brother Roy, his brothers and sisters-in law: Bessie and Selby Callahan, Pastors Hazel and Raymond Bursey, Allan Roberts and his first wife Flora and second wife Kathleen, Fred and Wavey Roberts, Jesse and Ken Knight, Olive and Clayton Butt, his brother-in laws Winston Cooper and Eric Hurley, nephews Jim Lush, Troy Roberts, Raymond Callahan, nieces Diane Lane, Sharon Roberts and Pearl Ball.
He leaves behind to cherish precious memories his wife of 67 years, Doris, his daughter Wanda and son-in-law Derrick Stuckey, his daughter Kim, his grandson Paul and his wife Ashley (Stuckey), and his precious great-granddaughter Hazel. Also mourning his loss but thankful for so many wonderful times together are his sister Donna (Roxanne), sisters-in-law Yvonne Cooper and Dorothy Hurley, and very special friend Arthur Weir as well as many nieces and nephews and their families, cousins, extended family and many great friends he has made over the years.
Harvey was born to Harry and Sylvia Rideout on August 25, 1936, in Campbellton, NL. Shortly after World War II ended, his father moved the family to Gander where he had been working during the war. Harvey immediately formed friendships and was involved in community activities and sports. Many of those friendships were maintained over the years. After high school, he went to work with Flying Tigers, an airline flying out of Gander at that time. Eventually he moved on to work with Eastern Provincial Airlines, and, in 1984, he moved to Lower Sackville, NS when that company moved its operations to Halifax. He went on to work at Air Atlantic from where he retired. Always longing for his home province, he, Doris and Kim moved back to Newfoundland in 2012 and settled in Upper Gullies to be near his daughter Wanda and her family.
Harvey loved the outdoors and all its beauty. His passion was hunting and fishing, really anything that was related to the woods and nature. He loved his trips across Gander Lake with family and friends, where they would enjoy time at the cabin over there and engage in whatever outdoor hunting or fishing activity that the season allowed. He also enjoyed time in Campbellton. He and his father built a cabin there in the 1970s and spent many a happy day on the salt water, fishing and just enjoying the beautiful waters of Notre Dame Bay.
Harvey will be missed by all who knew and loved him. But his ship will be welcomed on the other side by all those who have gone before.
The family would like to extend a very special thank you to the staff in Emergency and on Floor 6 East at St. Clares Mercy Hospital for the wonderful care he received during his brief stay there and for the compassion they showed to our family. Those kindnesses are so appreciated and helped to make a difficult time a little easier.
A visitation for family and friends will be held at Hickey’s Funeral Home, Kelligrews on Sunday, March 22, 2026, from 2 PM to 4 PM. The funeral service will take place on Monday, March 23, 2026, at 11 AM at Faith Pentecostal Church in Foxtrap, NL. Flowers will be gratefully accepted, or donations can be made to the Dr. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre or a charity of one’s choice. I am standing upon the seashore. A ship, at my side, spreads her white sails to the moving breeze and starts for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength. I stand and watch her until, at length, she hangs like a speck of white cloud just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other.
Then, someone at my side says, "There, she is gone."
Gone where? Gone from my sight. That is all. She is just as large in mast, hull and spar as she was when she left my side. And, she is just as able to bear her load of living freight to her destined port. Her diminished size is in me -- not in her. And, just at the moment when someone says, "There, she is gone," there are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices ready to take up the glad shout, "Here she comes!"
