Obituary of Sherwin Thomas Nugent
Nugent, Dr. Sherwin Thomas- 71, Passed away January 13,2010, in Halifax. Born in St.John's,NL., Predeceased by parents, Ellen and Philip Nugent. Survived by wife, Georgina (Dooley); daughters, Ellen (Ainslie) and Gail; brothers, Tony (Ursula) and Gary (Patricia). Sherwin was educated at Memorial University of Newfoundland, the Technical University of Nova Scotia, the University of Toronto, and received his Ph.D. from the University of New Brunswick in 1967. Following post-doctoral studies at the University of British Columbia (1967-1968) Sherwin joined the Physics Department at Dalhousie in 1968 as an Assistant Professor. During his academic career he taught physics and electrical engineering at Dalhousie and the Technical University, retiring in 2004. He served as Professor and Chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Dalhousie from 1998 to 2004. Sherwin's research was directed towards a Mathematical Model of the Infant Respiratory System and published over 52 papers on that and related subjects in scientific and medical journals. In addition he supervised several students pursuing Master's and Doctorate degrees. His research was supported by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council, and the Nova Scotia and New Brunswick Heart Foundations. He also took an active part in the Canadian Atlantic Section of the Institution of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, serving as chairman of that organization in 1982-1983. Sherwin was also a member of the Association of Professional Engineers of Nova Scotia. Colleagues will remember Sherwin as a dedicated teacher and researcher who approached every task with a keen mind, analyzed the problem thoroughly, and made important contributions to Biomedical Engineering. Visitation in the James J. Hickey Memorial Funeral Home, Kelligrews on Sunday, Jan 17 from 2-4 and 7-9. Burial on Monday, Jan 18,2010 at 9:30 am .in St .Edward's Cemetery, Kelligrews.
