I grew up in Topsail and still live just a few doors down from Pauline. I remember as a child/teenager going to school we would make our way up the road to Paulines to wait for the school bus just out side her store. Pauline would invite everyone no matter if their were twenty kids waiting for the bus to come in out of the rain or snow to wait for the bus. Before heading off to school she would always give everyone treats such a chips, candies or bubble gum, not one person would leave the store without getting a treat. Pauline was a kind caring women who loved to see all the kids each and every day. As we grew older and finished school we would never forgot Pauline. On days when we would make our way to Topsail beach during the summer, or just going for a walk there was always time to stop and have a chat. She was either out in the garden or sitting in her chair with the door open with a smile and a wave to come in. Her greeting was always " How are you today." The store is long gone but those memories will last a life time. I know every time I pass by Topsail Beach Lane I will always think of Pauline sitting by the window with her smile and wave and think back on the kindness she had shown to me and so many others over the years growing up in Topsail. RIP Pauline

I was sad to hear of Pauline's passing. My sincerest condolences.Pauline is one of the special people I remember from my childhood. When it was raining she would allow, no matter how many kids on the bus stop, into her store so we would be out of the rain. I am sure we left many puddles of water for her to clean up.One of my favorite memories is on the last day of school, we would run to Pauline to show her our report card, before we showed our parents, as Pauline would give the kids a special treat. In fond memory, Andrea ( Andy Ryan) Bates (of Carters Lane)

Adrian Halley posted a condolence
Tuesday, October 19, 2010
My name is Adrian Halley and I lived just up the road from Pauline. Pauline was one of my best relatives, friends and even employer at times. I did a lot of work for Pauline when she owned the store in Topsail. I sometimes tended the store for her but mostly I did most of her gardening needs and painted and such. It was an annual thing to lime her fence. Either Me or Peter Metcalfe or both of us would do it. Pauline was my first stop after I got to my Brother Brians place in Topsail. She always looked forward to seeing me and me her. The last few years her memory wasn't the greatest and she would say to me, Adrian do you know who planted those white birch trees out the back which you could see from her kitchen window, and of course I did as I knew I had planted them. She was very proud of them. Anyway I will miss having a tea with her when I visit Newfoundland now but I will always remember her. RIP SWEET PAULINE.
