Marlene, I was only a child when you and Earl came to N. S. the first time, I always had to give up my bed as the only girl I had my own room and a double bed. The next summer you came up a few years later, you had baby Kimberley with you, the next time you brought another present Andre, and then I think you stayed, not that you wanted to leave NFLD, but you did and then came Renee. Years later when you divorced Earl more children came that I don’t know. Sorry to hear of the passing of your mom, sounds like she led a hard life but a great life.see a lot of pictures you putt on Facebook and how much you loved your younger brother.Miss you and sorry for the loss love Kathy

So sad to hear of Gert’s passing. My deepest condolences to Darrell, Marlene, Tommy and family. I recall the years working in the laundry mat as a young boy, She would keep me on the straight and narrow and would not put up with my shenanigan’s. I have fond memories of all the good times with Gert which I will always hold dearly. She was like a mother to me, even when I wasn’t at work and hanging out with Darrell she was a mother figure. Thank you Gert. You will be missed more then you will ever know. Thoughts and prayers.

LOVE YOU MOM, I FOUND THAT VERY HARD TO SAY OVER THE YEARS, WHY, I HAVE NO IDEA, YOU WORKED YOUR HEART OUT FOR ALL OF US OVER THE YEARS, FORTY OF THEM IN THE SWELTERING HEAT OF THE SNOW WHITE LAUNDRY FOR A PITTANCE, JUST BARELY ENOUGH TO KEEP US ALIVE, LIFE WAS FAR FROM BEING EASY FOR YOU AND I NEVER HEARD YOU COMPLAIN EVEN THOUGH YOU SURELY HAD A LOT OF REASON TOO, YOU WERE A GOOD WOMEN, YOU NEVER TOOK ANY TIME FOR YOURSELF WHEN WERE GROWING UP WORKING DAY AND NIGHT, EVEN AFTER LOSING YOUR FIRST GRANDCHILD, CHRISTOPHER, MY SON, AND YOUR TWO CHILDREN DAMIEN,11, AND DEREK 42, BOTH WHO DIED TRAGICALLY. YOU WERE ALWAYS STRONG ON THE OUTSIDE HOWEVER I KNEW YOU WERE HURTING IN YOUR HEART, WHEN DAD DIED SUDDENLY AT 56 I SAY YOU CRY, I DIDN'T SAY ANYTHING, I COULDN'T, MY HEART BROKE TO SEE YOU HURTING THE WAY YOU WERE, YOU, LIKE MYSELF KEPT YOUR FEELING BOTTLED UP INSIDE, HOWEVER, EVEN THOUGH I NEVER TOLD YOU OVER THE YEARS I KNEW AND YES IT ALSO HURT ME. MOM, NOW YOUR IN ANOTHER PLACE, NO MORE WASHING CLOTHES FOR A FEW DOLLARS, NO MORE WORRYING WHERE THE NEXT MEAL WILL COME FROM, NO MORE SORROW, YOUR HOME MOM AND YOU HAVE AN ETERNITY TO FISH, SNARE RABBITS, PICK BERRIES, TEND YOUR GARDEN TO DO WHATEVER YOU WANT WHEN YOU WANT. THIS I KNOW BECAUSE MY MOM, GERTIE GROUCHY LAST JULY AT AGE 95 YEARS VERBALLY ACCEPTED JESUS CHRIST AS HER PERSONAL SAVOUR AND I HAD THE HONOR TO BE WITH HER WHEN SHE DID, MOM, I WILL ALWAYS LOVE, APPRECIATE AND RESPECT YOU FOR THE PERSON I KNEW YOU WERE. LOVE TOMMY

We are all very saddened by the loss of our dear Aunt Gert. Though she was only a month away from her 96th birthday it is still hard to lose her. We enjoyed visiting her and bringing her the special treats that she enjoyed like fish, rabbits, raisin buns and partridgeberries. She always had very interesting stories to tell of life in Merasheen and Clattice Harbour. She loved outdoor activities especially picking berries, snaring rabbits, planting flowers and vegetables and especially ice fishing. Aunt Gert was one of a kind and we loved her very much. We hope she is resting at peace now with her husband and sons gone before her. Much love to her family from Tom and Theresa.
