Sandra, Judy, Bill, Margaret: May you feel comfort at this time. I have many heart warming memories of your mother, stemming from her being an influential English teacher to me in my youth, and a continuing respect for her into my adulthood. Every time our paths crossed, I felt like I had run into a dear friend whom I admired greatly. She always made me feel like she was happy to see me. We have lost a treasure, for sure.

To all the family,
My first teaching assignment was at the Integrated Junior High (Fred Kirby) in Foxtrap. Being very inexperienced at the time, I was in awe of how Ellaline (I fondly called her “Ellie May”) could just walk into a classroom and within seconds you could hear a pin drop! Though at times that first year I had my doubts whether or not the profession was for me, she and other colleagues gave me much encouragement, and that resulted in a long teaching career that only ended last year! I appreciated her friendship and support, and after I left Foxtrap to teach in St. John’s I went occasionally to visit her in Cherry Lane after she retired. I am sitting here now at home near a Reginald Shepherd print which has a dory in it with the name “Sandra Ellaline” on the bow, and every time I look at it I think of Ellaline Smith. Many happy memories indeed! My wife Jean joins me in sending you all our thoughts and prayers at this sad time.
Sincerely,
Bob (& Jean) Rose

Condolences to the family
I first met Ellaline when I was a little girl and she came to Long Pond to teach at St. George’s. She stayed with my grandmother, who loved her dearly. Met her later when we taught together at St. George’s. She was a beautiful person. She was very dedicated to her family, her profession, and her many organizations. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. I know you have many wonderful memories to keep in your hearts, which will ease your pain over time.

Dear Bill and family,
Today I am feeling sad because on checking the Telegram obituaries, I see that your Mom has passed away. I remember her well (and you also) from my time on QERHS staff in the 70’s and and early 80’s. While your Mother and I never shared a staff room on a daily basis, there was a lot of contact through committee work and the NTA. Even though I am sad, my memories are still causing me to smile. My wish for you and your family is that your own memories will bring smiles through your tears.
Yours sincerely,
