Though I only knew Don for a short few years, I thought him a compassionate man who cared deeply for those around him. His kindness touched the lives of many people (and dogs). When he spoke of his children, it was evident that he thought the world of you. May you find comfort in the love he had for you.
Don, you will be missed my friend. Godspeed.

I have only just heard the news of Don's passing and am deeply saddened for his family. I worked with Don for years and trusted, with good reason, his judgement on the law and the particular needs of the communities in which he worked. He was a kind and decent man who was fearless in advocating for justice. He was a loyal friend and colleague to many. But above all, he was a wonderful father who was supremely proud of his sons and loved them dearly. I am so grateful for having had the privilege of working with such a courageous and unique lawyer and for all that I learned from him about the law and how it might reasonably be applied in the unique communities he served.

Don was a year behind me in law school. I enjoyed his take on the law then and when we talked in court years later. I liked his salty political analysis. I liked his takeover of the law school space like a fisherman claiming his trap berth. I liked his not caring when he was a bull in a China shop. He gave a bay perspective to every angle that made me smile. He was feared as an advocate of considerable skill. For me, I was glad of the laughs, camaraderie and strength.
Don’s death, too early, must be a keen loss to his family. I was so sorry to hear this news and you will be in my thoughts and prayers in the coming days.

I was a brand new 24 year old Crown Attorney in Goose Bay when I met Don. He'd tear me apart in Court and then invite me to dinner with him and Debbie. Don was a welcoming committee to anyone new starting out in Goose Bay and often went out of his way to arrange social events for the Bar. We travelled on all of the same circuits and he made sure that I always felt welcomed to hang out with the old boys. In my first summer in Goose Bay Don set me up with a salmon rod and reel, a set of flies, and several bottles of Deet, and took me salmon fishing (after I bought a license, of course, being a Fed and all). I still use that reel. Don was a tough lawyer and a kind soul, and will be missed. My condolences to his sons and family.

So sad to hear of Don's passing. I will always remember what he did for my wife, Rosellen Sullivan. She became sick while in court in Goose Bay several years ago and Don took care of her in a manner that may have saved her life. I also had many interactions with Don over the years. He was a completely genuine and down to earth person with a wicked sense of humour. He will be missed.

It was like a punch in the stomach when I got the call about Don's passing; I was very sorry to hear the news. We had been friendly opponents on a number of files, especially during his time working in Labrador. Don was a zealous advocate, and kept things interesting around the courthouse. He was also very obviously proud of his family. Very sincere condolences to his family and friends at this difficult time.

So very sad and sorry to hear of Don's passing. I knew Don from High School, and we were reacquainted when he moved to St. John's. He was witty, sharp, thoughtful and kind. Many dogs from Labrador found homes due to his diligence and he spoke so fondly of his years in the big Land.
My sincere condolences to his family, especially his children, whom he was so proud of.

Eleanor and I were shocked when Claudette told us of Don's sudden passing. I met Don in 1993 in first year law school. There are a few stories I could tell about those days, however they are best left in New Brunswick. During that time and since, I can certainly confirm other's comments about how much Michael and Patrick meant to Don. You could hear it in his voice every time he mentioned either of you. I remember going to work the day after our son was born. Your father asked me if it was a boy or girl. I told him it was a boy. Your father's reply was "Welcome to the club" by which he meant men who had sons. Don will be missed, but with cherished memories by one and all. Our wish for everyone is that the latter outweighs the former.

I met Don only a few years ago and he quickly became one of my closest friends. I trusted him completely and he was a confidant to me and to many people. He never held judgement of others and was always there help and support anyone who reached out to him. He was so intelligent and quick witted and fun. I will never forget the sound of his deep voice and laughter. He was a force in this world that will be deeply missed. May he be at peace now. Goodbye Don, I love you.

Quite sad news I am hearing this afternoon. I have not met Patrick and Mike, but I sure am thinking of you now and my heart is with you. I can say that there were many times when I picked up a federal file with Don's judgments within the notations, and came to see it his way. witty, incisive, got to the heart of the matter. a full on human being. not perfect, but pretty darned human. Heather, my thoughts are with you also.

No time will take away the times that Don and I shared. From a quick call to share a story or joke to the deepest of reflections on life we covered all of the bases.
I remember in particular early morning drives with him from St. John's to Gander where we tried our best to solve the universe. I also remember the many times at Don and Debbie's house in Goose Bay where I always felt like family....Don's caribou stir-fry was the best.
He will always have a place in my heart and thoughts.
