So sorry to hear of Luis’s passing. I worked as a secretary for Peter Young at the Department of Engineering, back in 1973 when the Co-operative Program hnfdq was in its infancy. Luis dropped in to our office frequently, always with biggest and brightest smile…a very happy and considerate person…always inquiring about the welfare of others. I’m truly sorry for his loss. My condolences to his family.

Got to know Luis very well over the years as a student at Mun Engineering and later with microtech computer center.
Didn't know he had passed away so it was a bit of a shock. It was a great professor and a very genuine and funny human being.

I am very saddened to just hear of Dr. Lobo's passing. His enthusiasm always made the lecture content very interesting, his quizzes were brutal, but it forced us to work hard, and I gained a lot from his courses. He was also very kind and personable, I remember him socializing after exams, his sense of humor. He's one of a few profs whom I would think of from time to time and wish I would run into on the street for a chat, which is why I am so very sad to learn that he has passed.

To Luis' family,
I am very sorry to hear about Luis' passing. Luis was a great professor during my time at MUN and always loved to carry on and have a good time. I will never forget the look on his face when someone in class would as a question that came close to making him think (which wasn't often). Many years after I completed engineering at MUN, I ran into Luis at Costco and he recognized me and we chatted. He asked me where I worked and when I told him, he started to quiz me on topics he taught me related to my work! He pointed out 3 or 4 other folks at Costco he taught during his time at MUN. Sure enough, they also came over to chat and have a chat with him as well. He was without a doubt one of the smartest people I met and still remember many of the things he drilled into our heads during class. I hope you can sit back and remember the good times with Luis and the joy he brought to your lives.

Janet and Family,
We were saddened to read of Lui's passing. We have such fond memories of him interacting with our children at track and field in Mount Pearl and being a chaperone-coach at the Legion Nationals with our daughter, Ashley. Also, your visits out to our place on Roaches Line after the 2000 Summer Games! We were, unfortunately, unable to attend his Celebration of Life last weekend but wanted you to know we are thinking of you. I am sure it was a beautiful Celebration, because he certainly lived an intersting and beautiful life.
Kindest regards,
Fellow Bell Islander, Tom, and Dale

To Luis’ family and friends. My sincere condolences. Luis was my first prof at MUN Faculty of Engineering. He was the most enthusiastic and friendly person, most intelligent, and always willing to receive questions and provide help. He was probably the greatest influence on my continuing through engineering.
I hope you have great memories to hold him near and dear.
Sincerely,
Gerry Antle, P.Eng. Class of ‘87

I was fortunate to take a class from Luis as a young Engineering student back in 1972 thereabouts. Luis was a fresh face unpretentious and full of that energy that drags you in. My son was fortunate as well to attend his lectures some 40 years later and also spoke highly of him. My last encounter with Luis was in the Sobeys Howley Place some 5 or so years ago where we chatted for some time. A positive influence on my life and all those students with who he came in contact...Les Barbour MUN Eng "Class of 76"

I remember Mr Lobo as one of our instructors in the class of 80 civil engineering. I used to stop by his office often and have a chat. It was a very smart person but also very humorous. He would tell me a joke and we would have a good laugh. Sad to see his passing as many of the professors from that era are now gone.. Rest in peace Mr Lobo

To Janet, Leticia and family, I send my deepest condolences.
I have many fond memories of my time with Luis, having met him when he first came to Canada to study at Waterloo University. We spent time together both away from the campus, and sometimes in the science and engineering labs working on projects that were developed in Luis' keen mind.
He was often a welcome guest at my parents' home and would spend holidays with us.
At that time, we shared a love of automobiles, and when he moved to Newfoundland on relatively short notice, he left his aging Alfa Romeo in my hands.
We visited a couple of times when I made it to St John's and the last time we were together was in the 70's when he came back to Ontario to arrange a patent for the hydroponic design that he was working on.
I am sorry that I didn't get to see him in the last few years. Knowing he was ill, I had planned to visit, but COVID-19 got in the way of travel.
Rest in Peace, Luis Jose da Vitoria Lobo. It was an honour to have you as my friend.

Thank you Brian for your condolences and sharing your memories of my older brother, Luis. I had forgotten about his Alfa Romeo car (the one with bucket seats, as he had described it to us...we had no idea what that meant then), and his patent for the hydroponics. Memories like this are very comforting. Thank you.
