Obituary of Maizie Letto

Maizie Janice Letto, daughter of the late Harold and Hilda (Moulton) Hiscock was born on August 30, 1946 in Winterton, Trinity Bay, and grew up in St. John’s where her father was the “club steward” at the Officers Club Crow’s Nest where she and her siblings Don (Cathy), Charlie (Mary) and Ann (Philip Daniel deceased) lived for many years. Her playground as a child was the War Memorial on Water Street. She began school at Bishop Spencer College on Bond Street and graduated from Bishops College on Penneywell Road. She studied education at Memorial University and began her teaching career at Channel-Port aux Baques. Irving invited her to a Queen’s College Valentine’s party in 1969, and after a short romance they were married on June 28, 1969. Thus began a happy personal and family relationship, a blend of the Hiscock and Letto traditions and relationships that grew together for 53 years and hopefully will continue into eternity.

Irving and Maizie were blessed with their daughter Lisa and son Jason, Jason’s wife Renee St. Croix and their “little groundhog” Bridget. This family relationship was the centre of her being to the day she died, and she felt blessed by the way she was accepted and valued as a member of Irving’s family and the way Irving became a part of the Hiscock family.  She followed Irving as his teaching career carried them to L’Anse au Clair, Kelligrews, Labrador City, Richmond Virginia and Glenwood/Appleton. When Irving decided to change careers in 1983, their family continued to develop through a relationship with the church families at Bay Roberts, Summerside, PEI, Lunenburg, Indian Harbour, Halifax, Flower’s Cove, coming to settle in Kelligrews in 2015.

Maizie was an intelligent, creative and artistic individual who loved to read, play cards, sew, pick berries and accumulated a personal mental encyclopedia of trivia that even surprised herself. She loved to sing and enjoyed being a member of several church and community choirs. She loved to laugh and was a gentle and loving person. After many years of compromised health, she died peacefully surrounded by family at the Health Sciences Centre on the first day of spring, 2022.

We want to extend special thanks and appreciation to the support she received from the medical community, especially Dr. Jatin Morkar and the staff at 4NorthA. And to our family and friends who have been a blessing for her and us.

Funeral arrangements are being planned through Hickey’s Funeral Home with visitation from 2-4pm and 7-9pm on Wednesday, March 23^rd. A celebration of her life will be held at St. Peter’s Church, Upper Gullies on Thursday, March 24^th at 2pm and interment at St. Peter’s Cemetery.
