My Aunt Joan was a very special lady! A gentle, kind, genuine soul who loved life, her family & friends, and a good game of bingo., especially if she won an Oh Henry bar! She taught me so much, from empathy to making homemade sweet bread. She taught me to enjoy all the simple things in life like a good cup of tea. We shared so many cups of tea together. She was like a second Mother to me. She was there for everything in my life. She would even be there when I woke up Christmas morning as a child even if it meant being there at 6 in the morning.
She was always so proud of her time working at the Royal stores downtown where she worked in both the china and makeup departments. She was also proud to have learned to speak some Portuguese to the sailors who visited the store. One of her favourite things to say was obrigada which means thank you in Portuguese.
She had many adventures with her husband Reg. They went camping, for a boil up, and loved a drive for a custard cone.
My Aunt Joan spent the last number of years at the caribou veteran’s pavilion where she made many friends and was a favourite among the staff because she was just such a kind lady. The care she was given there was truly amazing. There are no words that could express how thankful I am for all they did for her.
Obrigada Aunt Joan…. For everything you taught me in life. I love you so very much!
