When my kids were younger, Stephanie was 9 and Stephen was 4, I took them on a trip to Newfoundland to visit my Mom. We went to visit Aunt Pat and Uncle Les. Stephen, who has a fascination with anything that has wheels on it, discovered "Big Red" in the basement. "Big Red" was an ATV that Uncle Les used in the woods. Stephen hopped up on Big Red and pretended that he was driving it, but that wasn't enough. He wanted to go for a "for real" ride. Uncle Les was upstairs sitting in his recliner. He came downstairs, started big red up, and off into the woods they went. Stephen was the happiest little boy ever!! To this day, Stephen remembers 'Big Red" and the man who took him for a ride!!

Uncle Les was a true Toronto Maple Leafs fan. I know he waited patiently for the Leafs to bring home the Stanley Cup. Forty-six years to be exact. I have been away from home for 32 of those 46 years but whenever I returned to see my mom at Christmas time there was Les at our house on Boxing Day. Not for the food, or the spirits but to watch the annual World Junior hockey championships. And, quite often conversation would lead to HIS team, the Leafs. Never one to hold back his opinion on the current state of the Leaf players and management he would enlighten me (who really didn't care about the Leafs) of how and when the Leafs would once again claim victory amongst hockey's elite and hoist the Holy Grail of hockey while parading down Yonge Street. Unfortunately, he will not have the opportunity to do so now. But I'm sure he will be with them in spirit. I live in Toronto now and will be here for a few more years. If Toronto, by some mere miracle, does happen to win the Cup, I will attend the parade and think about a true Toronto fan, Uncle Les.
God bless, Dave Hiscock
