Obituary of David Bishop

BISHOP, David Archibald

October 27, 1949 – September 14, 2023

Passed peacefully at home on Thursday, Sept 14/23 after losing a brief battle with cancer, our dad, David “Dave” Archibald Bishop at the age of 73 years.

Dad was predeceased and now reunited by the love of his life Mary (Barron), parents Jean & George, Brother Walter, brother-in-law John Gosney and granddaughter Ashley Chafe.

Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories are his children Lisa (Rick Newell), David (Tonia) and Brian (Ashley); precious grandchildren Morgan, Merina, Brayden, Ryder, Bailey & Emma; Brothers Wayne (Carrie), Mike (Karen); Sisters Glenys Penner, Susan (Ron) Stark; Brothers-in-law Bill (Joy) Barron, Thomas (Jean) Barron, Jim Barron; Sisters-in-law Patricia (Bern) Tricco, Carol Gosney & Sue Bishop.  Also nieces, nephews and a large circle of other relatives and friends.

As the story goes and that he had told many times, dad was born by “the rock” in Seal Cove and grew up in Upper Gullies. At the young age of 17 he left for Wabush and met the love of his life on a blind date. There they raised their three children and he worked in the mines for 35 years before retiring at the age of 52 and returning back home.

While retired he enjoyed life to the fullest and spent a lot of time in the garden with his brothers and was actively involved with St. Peters Anglican Church.

Anyone who had the pleasure of knowing Dad knew he was a man of many words and stories.  If he didn’t know you, rest assured once he spoke to youhe knew who you were, where you were from and chances are he knew somebody in your family. He would make strangers friends.

Dad loved doing all things with his grandchildren. Whether it was going to watch them play hockey and baseball or making a trip to McDonald’s to pick them up lunch. We all knew when he attended these games he didn’t see much of the grandkids play, he would be walking around to see who he knew or who he could get to know. We hope you were one of the lucky ones seeked out in the crowd.

Dad will be missed by many and made an impact on everyone he met with how sweet and kind of a man he truly was. If you wanted or needed something done he would be the first to volunteer.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation for mom and dad will be held at Hickey’s Funeral Home, 570 Conception Bay Highway, Conception Bay South on Sunday, September 17th, 2023 from 3 – 7 pm. Funeral service will take place at St. Peter’s Anglican Church in Upper Gullies on Monday, September 18th, 2023 at 10 am. Internment for mom and dad will follow at St. Peter’s Anglican Cemetery.
