When I heard about Gus's passing my mind was flooded lot of remembrances....
We grew up together and there's times he stayed at our place in St. Lawrence and other times I would go and stay with him at their place in Salt Cove Brook.
When I stayed with him we did a lot of things - and I think it would be fair to say we pushed the envelope. Sneaking out his dad's guns and the ammunition so we can see what it could do, Going duck hunting in Chambers Cove when we shouldn't, taking his dad's new Chevrolet Impella on Shoal Cove Pond ice when we shouldn't have. The front wheel went through and we had to call his dad to arrange a front end loader from the mine to save the car...
And we helped his dad build that sailboat where we learned how to sand properly - and the many trips hunting with his dad when we would leave the Grand Bank area and walk out to Little Lawn mostly for Ptarmigan- Usually we would spend a number of hours crawling on our guts to try and get a shot at a goose. We both had a good laugh once when I met him in Calgary when geese where everywhere and folks were running over them with cars.
When he stayed with us, my dad had a lot of work lined up for us including school bus cleaning, picking rocks out of the garden and chasing pigs when they escaped from the pens.....
Interestingly the night before, I got the call we were planning a trip to St. John's and I had mentioned that we've got to go by and see Sue and Gus.
We didn't spend a lot of time over the last few years but as people have already commented- Gus was a character and he will be missed....
Rest in Peace Buddy

I was so sorry to hear of cousin Gus' passing, and I express my heartfelt sympathies to Susan and to all his family at this poignantly difficult time. Sadly, I didn't get to know Gus, but I recall that each time I shared his company, there was much laughter, storytelling, and a clear passion for his native Newfoundland. May we take comfort in knowing that he'll be reunited once again with our loved ones. Rest in peace, cousin.

My cousin Gus Tarrant was quite the character. To me, he was this fascinating human with incredible stories. Were they all true? Who cares, he shared them with great gusto and flourish. The last time I saw Gus was at a family reunion in Ottawa. I sort of forget the story of that day, but I won't forget Gus. Rest in Peace with all who love you.

Had many candid chats with Gus over the years, one as recently as only a few weeks ago. One helluva story teller! We laughed, oh how we laughed! Sad to hear of his sudden passing, but he was happy to be back home! He’ll be missed….thinking of you Susan, and holding you and your family in our thoughts and prayers as you process this very deep and personal loss!

I first met Gus when I was maybe 12 years old, I may have actually been younger. But it was a long time ago. Gus was working the fishing counter at the sporting good store Russell sports in Calgary, which I frequented as a young outdoorsman. Over the years, our friendship grew from casual hallows and Fishing Conversations at the store to the point where I would go there just to BS with Gus. (And as we all know, he could BS with the best of them). At some point when I was around 18 I found myself in dire need of a place to stay, This came up to Gus And one of our bullshit sessions at the store, and out of nowhere he said come stay with us until you find your feet again, he did need to check with Sue first (from here on known as mom in this story and my life). Had later that evening, like a stray dog found on a gravel road, Gus brought me home. Our relationship turned from friendship into family overnight. I was lucky enough to spend countless hours with Gus both at home and in the field hunting and fishing. 10 years ago, he drug me all the way across the country to Newfoundland for a visit back home with him, which was an experience I’ll never forget. Even after Gus And sue moved back to Newfoundland four years ago, we remained close. Having video chats on every holiday. He was known as grandpa Gus to my children, and it was one of the best friends anyone could ever ask for. His memory and spirit will never be forgotten by anyone who was lucky enough to have known him.

Dear Sue and all,
The MacIntosh family in Kitchener sends our most heartfelt condolences to you and all the family at the passing of Gus. We didn't know you well, cousin, as time and space had us growing up in different corners. But the spirit of St. Lawrence ties us all so tightly in heart. I know Uncle Alec, along with mom and all the siblings, welcome him with open arms. Rest in peace, cousin!
