Obituary of Joan Slaney

Joan Patricia Slaney

October 28th, 1940 – September 1st, 2024

Today we say goodbye to the matriarch of our family, the glue that held us all together for years. She longed to be reunited with Dad and Dylan. She is finally at peace.

Mom and Dad spent 56 years in Wabush, Labrador where they raised a family. Dad worked at Wabush Mines for 38 ½ years and mom held down the fort. She was involved in everything her kid’s family were in spending countless hours volunteering and being active in the community. Being a worrier, her whole life proved true right up to the very end. Always thinking about everyone else and wondering if we would all be okay, when she is gone.

Mom loved the social atmosphere and immursed herself in multiple organizations such as Ladies Auxiliary, Wabush Minor Hockey, President of the Mom’s Club, Girl Guide Leader, Members of PTA, Knights of Columbus, Election Officer, Tamarack Golf Course, work for  School the Board, played Broomball, Softball, Provincial Dart Champion and Bingo! Don’t forget her love for Bingo!

Family was everything, a very passionate woman who was resilient and fierce in everything she loved and did. Always treating our friends like her own in our home. Nan, the title that held the highest honor, played a pivotal role in helping raise her grandchildren and shaping them for who they are today.

Predeceased by her loving husband of 60 years, Robert, and her grandson, Dylan. Parents Mary and Frank Brenton, brothers Ed and John and sister, Margaret.

Leaving to mourn are her five children, Vaughn, John (Nadine), Betty (Eric), Annette (Wayne), Craig (Shannon), grandchildren and great-grandson.

Left with fond and loving memories are her siblings, Joe (Shirley), Earl (Brenda), Frank (Denise), sister, Helen along with a large circle of family and friends.

We would like to thank the staff of St. Clare’s Hospital, the Health Science Centre and our family doctor, Dr. Deanne Leonard for the wonderful care and support mom has received.

Meadowcreek Retirement Home has been mom’s home for the past two years. Mom was treated like family and made so many new friends there. Thank you for being good to mom.

Cremation has taken place and per mom’s wishes she be laid to rest with Dad and Dylan in Labrador City.
