To Karen, Bruce, Jennifer and all of Ken’s family!
I was so shocked and saddened to hear of Ken’s passing. I am originally from Green’s Harbour, Ken’s dad, Bruce and mom (predeceased Pearl ) where good friends with my parents Fred and Bessie Bennett .We left Green’s Harbour when I was in my early teens and became disconnected with Bruce and his family. Two years ago I reconnected with Bruce and Pearl, and so glad I did.
Ken was still and infant and Jennifer wasn’t born.
I got the opportunity to get reconnected with Ken’s Dad who is such a genuine gentle soul as well as his mom Pearl who had such a contagious smile which I never forgot because it lit up her whole face brought such brightness and twinkles to her eyes.
Ken had so much of his Dad’s and Mon’s very welcoming pleasant personalities.
I had the extreme pleasure to get to know Ken and his very dedicated Angel of a wife Karen, I feel so fortunate to have them in my life.He was such a pleasant guy, so sweet, and welcoming, always pleasant and positive despite all of his health issues, this characteristic trait always amazed me.
He certainly past way too soon, but he left a legacy to his family filled with happy memories which will help them through this grief and sadness , keeping him always alive in their hearts, souls and minds. RIP dear Kenneth, God Bless Ken’s family, my thoughts and prayers are with you all. God speed.

I had the good fortune to work with Ken for many years at the Telegram, most notably one summer on the night desk, editing the Telegram in a pressure cooker environment to get the entire paper to the printers by 3:00 am. With no google – and a primitive, constantly-crashing word processing system – we would use each other as last-second fact-checkers, spell-checkers, and ethics committees. All the editors would be calling out to each other, asking questions, or cracking jokes and cursing to get through the night and the insufferable computer system.
Ken made those nights not just bearable, but enjoyable, hilarious, and memorable. Ken was extremely knowledgeable; he was a beacon of calm in a storm of deadlines. I can picture him sitting calmly at the giant monitor, his manner and conversation unchanging as the final deadline ticked ever closer, and new problems or glitches came at us. We always got it done.
One night, an obituary came in for Orville Redenbacher, right at deadline, and the article was to be used to fill a small space on an international page. Another editor shouted out the suggested headline “Orville Redenbacher pops off.” We probably had about 60 seconds until final deadline and a handful of other headlines still to write. Ken and I debated the merits of the pun, figured it was harmless, and said ‘why not’ to our fellow editor. We both felt quite bad the next day when the editor received a one-week suspension for the headline.
Ken went way too soon; he was a brilliant man, and a pleasure to hang out with until 3 o’clock in the morning. I’m pretty sure he would want us to have a laugh, be clever, and remember the good times, even at this time of great sadness.

Karen -
My deepest condolences to you and your family. I knew Ken a bit when I was a little girl - My mother is Judy Taylor Barrett from Green's Harbour. Then we crossed paths again at CHMR. Although I didn't work much directly with him as a journo (I'm with CBC) we had lots of friends in common. Everyone I know who knew Ken spoke highly of him as a colleague and a friend. May all the true and kind words about Ken be a comfort to you and your loved ones. Sincerely, Heather Barrett.

Was lost for words when I heard the news. One thing we all wish we had was more time. I’ll never forget what Ken has done for me throughout my life, he watched me grow up, and played a big role in the person I have become today. This man was more of a father to me than my own. I hope to meet you again in the next life, as you have made this one much better for all of the people around you. I will always hold you dear to me in my heart, and hopefully one day you can teach me to play guitar all over again.
I love you buddy, rest easy.

Karen, Wendy, Johnathon and Mr. Simmons,
It is with a very heavy heart and deep sadness that we write this condolence to you all. Ken was a man to be admired and respected. He had a strong work ethic, great sense of humour and an endless love of music. But the quality that shined through the most was the depth of love that he had for his wife Karen and his family. We will cherish the countless memories that we made in your home and at the many outdoor jam sessions that you so graciously hosted. Rest easy big guy.
