Aunt Julie and family there are many fond memories of Uncle Sam and it's hard to chose just one, but here are a few of my favorites that mostly involve camping, playing horseshoes, barbacueing and having a few laughs. Uncle Sam could make comedy so naturally. I remember a couple of times where we played horse shoes for most of the day and when we were finished he said we had thrown enough iron to put a new track across NFLD. Another time all the family was around a camp fire when Uncle Sam kicked a couple of junks into the fire and our children were amazed that he didn't catch fire. There were many funny sayings but one of my favourites is "are you using the chair you are sitting on" or when he would put a hot dog on the barbeque next to the pork chops to "eat while he was idling." I also remember the parties at our house in the early years when Uncle Sam provided the music with the accordion. We would try to sing and of course the words were not well known but we added our own. Many great times indeed!
I remember the time when you had chickens. He could not get them to lay eggs without the proper feed and he wondered how they laid eggs before the chicken feed was invented. And of course the times we spent playing pool in the basement. I am not sure uncle Sam was there but we never had to worry about being in trouble when he came home. Another time at Makinsons when Lorraine had her bike stolen. I spotted the bike in a locals yard. The police came and picked me up and we went to the place the bike was spotted but they couldnt do anything about getting the bike back it had been painted. The paint was still wet. Uncle Sam was quite perplexed by the whole affair but he never lost his cool. There are many more times we spent together which I can not recall but I am sure there will be many stories told in the next few days that will help you all remember the good times shared. Although there were many days in the last few years when he was sick that must have been challlenging for the family he was still uncle Sam. I wish we were home to be with the family but I am sure Uncle Sam would approve of us being on the mainland celebrating the birthdays of several family members. Maybe we will find a few accordion tunes on the internet and play them for the grandkids. I am sure that would make Uncle Sam smile!
