Obituary of Benston Gillard
GILLARD
Benston
June 21, 1968 - November 6, 2016
While he would rather be moose hunting, Benston died reluctantly at the Health Sciences Centre after a too long illness. Before he could aim his new left-handed rifle at a large bull moose on a frosty bog, cancer wrenched the strength from a body eager for the Newfoundland outdoors. Originally from Roddickton, Benston constantly displayed the traits many Newfoundlanders are known for: love of country, strong work ethic, commitment to family and willingness to travel widely for employment. He is predeceased by his dad, Stewart. Feeling most profoundly the loss of such a wonderful man are his wife, Michele; his mom, Martha (Derek); brother, Keon; sisters-in-law Sherry Haines Nugent (Randy), Corina Peters (Karl), Megan Murphy (Tim), Lisa Haines Spurrell (Brad); mother-in-law Lynn Moore (George), father-in-law Leonard Haines; nephews and neices Zachary,Jacob, Adrian, Karla, Estelle and Erik; and weekly card conspirators Netty, Skip, Krispy and sometimes Tim. Those saddened to hear of one so well liked yet taken so young include, in addition to extended family, friends from wherever Benston lived and worked. Resting at James J. Hickey Memorial Funeral Home, Kelligrews, Visitation Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m., Wednesday from 2 - 4 p.m. and from 7 -9 p.m. Memorial service will be held from James J. Hickey Memorial Chapel in Kelligrews on Thursday at 11 a.m. Interment at the Anglican Cemetery, Dunn's Hill Road, Foxtrap.
