So sorry to hear of your loss. Our family were comforted by this kind man when our son died suddenly at the age of three. I was amazed how kind and considerate he was to each member of our family not only on that day but when he returned to finish his investigation and spent time with my seven year old son who was trying to cope with the loss of his brother. I can see that he would be interested in helping others. May he be granted eternal peace and may God grant his family healing.

Mike was one of my trainers when I first became an ASIST trainer in 2014 and I was so incredibly saddened this week to hear of the sudden loss of such a compassionate friend. Mike was a mentor for me as a trainer and a such an excellent champion of suicide prevention and intervention. He was a co-trainer with Jackie and I in our early training days and he always had a kind word to offer, a laugh (or many) to lighten the mood, or relieve nerves we had as trainers, and an anecdotal story from his long RCMP career or work with ASIST NL, to help the participants understand an aspect of training, or just to add a personal aspect to their understanding of suicide. I am forever grateful to have met, worked with, and been mentored by Mike. I am a better ASIST trainer because of him and I will not forget his impact on me or his legacy of creating suicide safer communities. ❤️ My heart is with his family and friends, and our ASIST NL family.

From the first to the last time I spoke with Mike, my memories are of his kindness, compassion, desire to help and support, and humor. He sensed when someone needed an ear, often when they did not know it themselves. It's no wonder he and Cheri co-facilitated the sharing circle at our ASIST NL Trainers' conference each year. I felt honored to have worked with Mike to develop sessions on "Letting Laughter" for the Hope and Healing Day for Survivors of Suicide Loss. I will forever be grateful to have known such a beautiful heart and soul, whom I so admired for many things, not the least of which was his amazing power of quiet support . He was so proud of his family and my heart breaks for the loss you have suffered. (ASIST Trainer NL)

To Lois, Andrew, Andrew and Bethany and extended family: I was shocked to learn of Mike's passing, especially since I seen him briefly at Seal Cover grocery late last week, complete with his usual humour. He was at the counter getting checked out and and as soon as he spoke to the cashier I knew who he was (of course he was joking with her as well!!). When I said hello (while wearing the mandated mask as a disguise), he said "who are you"? -giggling. We chatted briefly and then said our adieus. Though I met mike through Softball, I also got to know him a little in his line of work as an RCMP Officer. I worked with the local paper at the time an called on him to find information on something newsworthy. I remember well the torch relay from the 1996 summer games when Mike was leading the parade(In a police vehicle) from Holyrood to the Woodstock in Paradise and then back to Sgt. Nugent's park. I was taking pictures for the paper and asked Mike if I could taq along with him. No problem and he picked me up at about 7:30am. !! Little did I know that the relay parade would take 10-12 hours. We were both beat out but had a lot of laughs and smoked about 3 packages of cigarettes each. LOL. I never met a kinder, compassionate man of such genuine character and wish I had kept in touch over the years. Please know that you all are in my thoughts and prayers. May he rest in peace!!

So very sad to hear this news. I worked with Mike to reach out to Law Enforcement many years ago. Tarie Kinzel networked the two of us together. Mike was so passionate about reaching out to RCMP and first responders. When we met, he mentioned that he retired in 2011, after 40 years in the field. Even then, he remained engaged working alongside Tarie for the Canadian Law Enforcement Committee for LivingWorks which was made up of cops from various city police services and federal (RCMP). Their goal back then was to ensure that the various agencies using ASIST continued to carry on with the training that provided tools to protect the protectors.
Mike was a faithful trainer and advocate. We will miss him greatly. Please know we are standing alongside all of you across Canada and the US to carry on Mike's (and our beloved Tarie's) passion for this work. With respect and prayers, Glen. (ASIST Trainer / LivingWorks - USA)

I am saddened and shocked to learn of Mike’s passing. He was such a great mentor and friend to me…especially following the loss of my brother Brendan to suicide. Sixteen years ago when Barry McGale sparked the idea of a vigil in NL to remember those lost to suicide, Mike was among the greatest supporters for the vigil and drove the distance to attend the inaugural vigil in Cape Broyle. He also attended and participated in many of the vigils.
He was a great colleague to train with and to learn from! I echo Gerry’s comments that he was a big guy with a big heart! Many years ago when I attended the trainer conferences Mike was the King of Karaoke and Charades and of course he had an entertainment partner in the late Noel Brown (Tracy and Randy (Neet and Wish) are now the Queen and King of comedy and entertainment. To remember his legacy, I am working on the alphabet according to Mike…I will send along when complete.
My heart breaks for Lois, their family and all of us, his ASIST family. Mike - may the songs of the Angels welcome you to your final resting place! Now you join Noel and no doubt the two of you are already planning educational ventures and fun times for everyone! God speed and RIP!

Lois and extended family of Mike
I was shocked to read of Mikes passing
Mike came to Hr Grace very early in his career - it was probably his first posting
I was just starting my career as a lawyer - Lois was my first assistant -
At the Courthouse one day he asked me about Lois - I suggested he should contact her - the rest is history !
Through his long career Mike Ouellette excelled in all aspects of his work and community involvement.
His personality and good nature were his trademark - he was as excellent Police Office and a credit to the Force. .
The comments of those whom he met on the road of his life are testaments to a life - well lived.
Too soon he passes but he will live on in the hearts and minds of his family and multitude of friends.
May his eternal rest be in peace my friend.
Godspeed Mike

Dear Lois and Family,
I knew Mike through the ASIST NL family for more than 20 years. We did many T4T's together, attended LW's conferences in both Canada and the US and he drove me back to the airport a few times after ASIST NL's conferences. His generosity and kindness were immeasurable, and his friendship meaningful. He will never be forgotten.
May the fond, loving memories you have of him somehow help carry you through this very difficult and painful time.

I first met Mike in 2009 at an ASIST conference in Banff. He made a generous offer for me to come and stay with him and Lois in NL and to attend the conference there. I was welcomed like family and returned many times. I also worked with Mike on ASIST T4T when he came to Scotland. Mike and his family were kind and generous to me when I was going through a difficult time in my life. Mike was so welcoming to my partner Iain when we returned to NL together, making him feel at home. His kindness meant the world to me and through my connection to him have made many other precious friendships. I will miss Mike and his dry humour, big heart and honesty. My heart is sore for Lois and the kids and I hope they feel surrounded by love and care at this sad time. With much love, Marie and Iain

Betty and I were very saddened to learn of Mike’s passing. If you were having a bad day and ran into Mike, everything seemed brighter. It takes a special person to give of themselves for the benefit of others as Mike has done through his years of service, not only as a member of the Force, but in particular as the Member and Employee Assistance Program Coordinator for many years. I had many discussions with Mike as he represented the best interests of those he took under his wing. They could not have flown with a better person. Our sincerest condolences to the entire family.

Lois and family,
As part of the ASISTNL family I have so many wonderful memories of Mike, from trainings, conferences, meetings and social gatherings. My recollections of Mike are a mixed bag of laughing hysterically at his madcap humour, and being simultaneously impressed by the depth of his wisdom, integrity, compassion and character, and surprised by his sensitivity. Behind his jovial, fun-loving (often quite silly) exterior beat the heart of a lion -- a kind, loving, generous man who was willing to be present in difficult moments with people on the hardest days of their lives. I pray that you are surrounded by people who share that heart at this time, and that you are strengthened and comforted by the knowledge that Mike's life made indelible impressions on everyone who was privileged to meet him.
With much love and many prayers for peace, comfort and even joy as you remember your Mike,
Janice Daley

I meet Mike when he was first stationed at the Holyrood detachment many years ago…
Back then we had a Thursday night poker game once a month which rotated between our homes ( mostly fun game only $20 of quarters allowed and when or if you lost your $20 you sat out until lunch)
When the game was at your home he was always proud to show off your beauty queen picture with much pride. Of course we always tormented him and said he must have had money to be married to a beauty queen.
RIP. Mike
