Janis & all the family:
We share our sincere condolences with the entire family at this sad time. Bert & Olive were mentioned many times by our parents, Frank & Irene Lewis. We heard many stories of our great-grandfather, Frank Lewis, who was superintendent for Baine Johnston & Co. at Battle Harbour. As a matter of fact, he's pictured on the mural that's situated on the dock there. So you can see how we feel we have a close connection to "The Hardy's". Dad also told of escapades when he was a lad riding his bicycle from St. John's to Upper Gullies (no small feat) to your parent's house and being greeted with a cold glass of milk and, I would imagine, a cookie or two. The memories will live on forever in all our lives and bring a smile to our faces or a tear to our eyes but aren't we the lucky ones to have lived such a beautiful, joyful life with those who have passed.

We are so very sorry to lose our special Aunt “Ollie”, as Dad called her. I have so many fond memories of visits to see her and Uncle Bert over the years. Over many summer holiday trips to the island, and often throughout the winter when there were appointments for orthodontics for Jamie, medical appts for Dad, our father and mother always made time for us to visit her. Mom has special memories of her visits with Aunt Olive and Uncle Bert and wanted me to say that she was always made to feel very welcomed. When I, Leighann, was in University on the island back in 2004, it was the last time I saw either of them. I remember Aunt Olive having so much spirit and having a real appreciation for all things important, family, nature and kindness. We will miss her. A family treasure has been lost. Condolences to all from the Way family (Gary).

To Janice, John, and all the Hardy Family. Olive was a beautiful spirit, always positive and pleasant. When I was an interim priest at St. Peter's we shared Communion on several occasions and enjoyed reminiscing about Labrador. She was eternally optimistic and loved her family, and all the people she met in her life journey. A beautiful spirit who be present with you always. May she rest in peace.

Hardy Family, I have many fond memories of your Mom. What a wonderful Mom. Your house was my second home growing up , hanging out in the playroom and endless cookies . I would go home with a full belly and be told I had to finish my plate. Sometimes after teasing Bob your Mom would say Shake it time for you to go home. Next day would see me returning for another day of fun. As an adult when visiting Battle Harbour I stayed with Mr. and Mrs Hardy and what a scoff she put off . Mrs Hardy loved to pick berries both in Carbonear and in Labrador, those pies. What I will miss the most was the tingling eyes and that smile which lit up her face. Our families have had a strong connections through the ages. Mr and Mrs Hardy have a family to be proud of.

To all the Hardy family…I was saddened to hear the news of your mom’s passing. Such a beautiful and heartfelt tribute to her through her obituary. I remember with fondness some years ago when Boyd and I enjoyed bowling with her at our weekly bowling league, always making sure to speak to us all and ask how we were doing. The delicious cake she so lovingly made for our bowling rewards night at year end was very special. Being in her company at the Good Friday fish meal at Bob and Colette’s was always a favourite of ours. Her stories were loved by us all. Always kept in touch with Wayne and Marg on her health and happiness. She was a special one of a kind beautiful person and she certainly had a life well lived.

Dear Hardy family,
Our thoughts are with you at this time in sharing the love and loss of beloved Olive - mother, grandmother and great grandmother; neighbour and friend. Our family first met Nan, as many affectionally and respectfully called her, at Beth and Karl's wedding in St. John's. The love and joy that Nan shared that day was like sunshine on a very special day. Her smile was infectious and her sparkling eyes were so knowing. I'll never forget the hugs between Beth and her lovely Nan and with Karl on that wonderful day.
Since we live in Saskatchewan, I have gotten to know more about Olive through the many stories told by family about her life, her bountiful garden, her joyful flowers, her sharing and her dedication to family and friends. Beth and Karl tell us about their visits with her each time they returned home for Christmas and every summer. Their pictures are always a delight to see, especially when Olive is surrounded by her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her love and joy are so pure and golden! We so appreciated hearing from Jan and Olive in each Christmas card, too. Olive gave so much to everyone in so many cherished ways. All of the heartfelt tributes speak so much about her spirit, love and beauty.
Her light continues to be shared and shines in all of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Many Blessings all.
With love,
Brenda Valiaho

Dear family,
I am with you all in spirit as I process the passing of your mom, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt. My thoughts are with you all.
I have been reflecting on the much loved “Aunt Olive” that I knew … her certain special smile and the twinkle in her eyes, her hands extended beckoning us to come and sit awhile, her great love of family, her welcoming gestures of hospitality and genuine warmth pervading her presence, the taste of her home-cooked food prepared with love and laid out on her kitchen table, her eagerness to show and share her garden and its stories, my mom’s stories of her energies and abilities, her handpicked bakeapples (or any handpicked berry) transformed into jam or delicious other desserts, stories of Battle Harbour and her spirit-filled love of life. For me she was the embodiment of “a zest for life” and “the love of the land, the sea and the sky” of Newfoundland. I will always cherish my memories of my Aunt Olive.
I am comforted to know that she now rests in peace, eternally.
I extend my most sincere condolences to all of Aunt Olive’s family members and to all those others who also loved her dearly.
Prayerfully and with love,

John Ted Keith Janice Bob and your families. It was with great sadness that I learned of Mrs Hardy’s passing. My first call after that was to my own dear mother who would like to send along her deepest condolences to you all at this time. It led to a great conversation of fond memories of a special time gone by. You all were truly blessed to have this loving caring woman as your mother. I know of no one who was so in tune with nature like Mrs Hardy. She was so comfortable and at peace in her gardens at Battle Harbour and Upper Gullies.and on the berry grounds and took great pride in everything she grew from seed. Delighted to share all her cooking and baking with anyone who had the pleasure of dropping by for a visit. She gave me a new meaning for “down to earth “. I can’t help but smile when I reminisce of every meeting where you would be greeted with the most wonderful smile and a genuine concern for me and my family. Janice the love and dedication that you gave these last few years to your mom is nothing short of remarkable and deserves a very special mention. May you be blessed along with your family with good health and happiness for many years to come for your unconditional love to Mrs Hardy. Dear Hardy’s,
I hope you’ll forgive me for referring to Nan as Nan. In our family’s world she is and always will be Nan Hardy.
How incredibly sad you must all be today. I can assure you that there is more than a tinge of sadness accompanied by many moist eyes as we all read and come to know that Nan has finally made her last trip North. That’s because for everyone who knew her, you her immediate family in particular, the emotions around losing her are real and the pain will sting like fire.
But the memories she leaves you are true. They don’t sting at all and you will never run out.
For a physically tiny woman, nonetheless, Nan was a monumental presence. Blessed with the gift of humility, she could easily draw you into her aura, you simply wanted to be there. It was a positive and safe place where you could kick off your shoes and not ever have to worry about being judged or questioned. Another gift of hers was that of hospitality. She had a knack of making you feel that the chair you occupied had been saved for you. She was generous, and being that way came easy to her. This encompassed everything from her sharing her famous Labrador smoked salmon, to amazingly tasty jam and preserves, to cuttings from her garden that you might have admired. Cindy and I have more than a few samples of Nan’s planting growing in our own garden to this day.
And who can forget New Year’s Eve, parading around their house at midnight banging pots; and then doing it again all over again at 1230 in honour of Labrador. The memories are endless, and again I say true.
She was so proud of her children and all their accomplishments. She shared their joy and cried at their pain. She adored her grandchildren and if she was ever going to brag it would almost exclusively be about them
Time passes and times change. But decency and good character never change. And over the years Nan never changed.
Cindy and I want you all to know that for us Nan was special. We are both sad and somewhat quiet this evening after getting the news. You have always had our deepest regard and respect. Today you have our profound sympathy.
Thank you for your choice of photo on the website. You captured her to perfection, her and that serene smile.
Thanks for the friendship, take care of each other and cherish the memories. Safe harbour Nan, peaceful journey…….
All the best.

To John and all the Hardy families. We were so sorry to hear about your mother's passing. We are sending our sincere condolences to all your families. Keep her memory alive as these memories will help pass the loneliness away. There's a song that says There is only one mother, only one mom. That's so true.
