Obituary of Edna Marie Joy
JOY, Edna Marie (nee Halley)
Passed peacefully on December 6, 2023, at Chancellor Park in St. John’s.
Predeceased by her husband; Raymond Joy Sr., parents; Alex and Marion (Nugent) Halley, sisters; Muriel Halley, Regina (Halley) Murphy, brothers; Alex Halley Jr., Stephen Halley, Paul Halley and daughter-in-law; Margaret Pike.
Leaving with loving memories, son; Ray Joy Jr. (Lisa), daughter; Cathy (Hubert) Hall, grandson; Aaron (Sarah) Hall, sister; Eleanor (Halley) Rice, brothers; David (Arlene) Halley, Stan Halley (Ontario) and special cousin; Colleen (Merv) Samuelson Howard (Ontario). Also very special friends Carolann Sheppard and Donna Fitzgerald.
Edna was born and raised in Topsail where she also spent most of her married life until moving to Paradise in later years. In the 1970s, Edna was well known for “Joy’s Driving School”, as the sole owner and operator, teaching many on the way to their driver's license. In other years, Edna owned and operated a school bus service for children with exceptionalities and each child gained a special place in her heart.
For many years, she was an avid bowler, enjoying a celebrated career bowling in competitions in every Canadian province. She won the 1979 Canadian Singles Bowling Championship in Victoria, BC. Also in 1979 she was nominated for the provincial female athlete of the year. Edna was inducted into the Conception Bay South Sports Hall of Fame in 2000 and the Newfoundland and Labrador 5-Pin Bowlers Association Hall of Fame in 2003.
